General Video Web sites

http://www.DVinfo.net Web site for general videography information. Great discussion board with many professional members who are feee with helpful advice and solutions to video problems. I have found the 'All Things Audio' section to be particularly helpful. This is a 'real names' board.

http://www.Vimeo.com A web site to host your videos. There are various membership levels starting with Basic (Free) that has more limitations (have to wait at least 30 minutes to view your uploaded video and is only for non-commercial uses) up to varrying degrees of features (no wait time for viewing, more file space, commercial uses allowed) based on membership cost.

Application-specific web sites

http://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_x  The Apple support page for FCPX.

http://www.divergentmedia.com The web page for ClipWrap. Re-wrap existing HDV (mts) or AVCHD (mts) footage into QuickTime format. I use this for the *.tod files that earlier JVC camcorders used.

Terminology

Codec stands for compression and decompression. A digital scheme to reduce the side of video or music data files with minimal loss of information. File types:

AVI: Audio Video Interleave (Quicktime and Microsoft)

WMV: Windows Media Video

MPEG: Motion Picture Experts Group

MPEG-3: used by most MP3 music players

MPEG-2: used for compressing most DVDs

MPEG-4: for audio and video for cell phones, broadband, and Hi-Def

MPEG-4, H.264 compression used by Apple

NLE stands for “non-linear editing”. In nonlinear editing one can add or subtract clips or elements, like audio, from within the video storyline without having to go back and re-do everythhing from the edit point forward. The section of the storyline that comes after where the edit is done moves back in time to fill the void, or moves ahead to allow the insert.
